Veterinarians – who do they work for?

If I were to go to a regular doctor I would expect that they would have my best interests in mind.

But, if I take an animal to the vet, that vet is actually looking out for my interests as well. The animals interests are only of concern if they overlap mine or don’t conflict with my interests (i.e. spending too much money on care).

Is this right? Shouldn’t animal doctors have the same regard for their patients as human doctors have for theirs?

I thought doctors also refused to help humans if they didn’t have enough money… at least in the U.S.
