Vegan MoFo post #1: No time to eat!

I signed up Liberation BC for Vegan MoFo (vegan month of food) where we have to blog about food once a day for the month of October. It’s October 4th and I haven’t posted any blogs and I’ve come to realize that I have horrible eating habits.  There’s simply not enough time to eat 3 times a day!

In this first blog, I will take you through a day in the life of an activist and the food items I encounter.

7:30am – Morning leafleting for turkeys at train stations. Canadian Thanksgiving is in 2 weeks and one of the saddest holidays in my opinion.  I love turkeys so much because they are some of the most affectionate farm animals on earth.  I’m not kidding! And no, turkeys are not food.

9:00 am – Reward myself with a vegan cupcake and Guayaki Empowermint Yerba Mate from Whole Foods Market.  The pink frosting on the cup cake looks amazing but the cupcake itself is dense and kinda not so great. Whole Foods has a tendency of having not so great desserts. The yerba mate though, is great for kick-starting my day.

9:30am – Check email, Facebook and make calls.  Get ready to head out to Co-op Radio.

12:00pm – Play guest co-host on Animal Voices Radio Show on Co-op Radio.  I interviewed Jon Camp, Director of Outreach from Vegan Outreach. Jon is coming to Vancouver on Sunday to give a talk on animal activism and we’ll be celebrating with a Thanksliving feast sponsored by Tofurky and our own amazing local vegan baker Vegan Mania!

1:00pm – Pick up veggies at SPUD (a local all organic grocery delivery store) for my rescued bunnies. SPUD gives me a special “bunny discount”.  My lovely friend Lesley works at SPUD and she hooks me up with some awesome door prizes for Sunday’s Thanksliving event.

1:30pm- Think about Vegan MoFo blog and feel guilty about how I’ve not eaten since 9am. Stop off at Drive Organics for some grocery shopping

3:00pm – Arrive home and eat leftover spaghetti.  There’s nothing in the fridge so I pour some Parma (vegan Parmesan cheese) , olive oil and salt on the pasta and eat the incredibly boring pasta in about 1.5 minutes!

4pm – Head out to Karmavore (new vegan store in New Westminster) to set up an info table at their sale event.

6pm – Krista from Vegan Mania brought a bunch of mouthwatering desserts to give away for free at the sale event.  I’m embarrassed to say, but that’s my dinner!

Ok, you have to eat more, Joanne. (although I know it’s sometimes hard to find time to eat when you’re so busy.) I had one of those cupcakes from Whole Foods last week – vanilla, but the cake part kind of tasted like carrot. With the frosting to compliment the cake, I found it to be absolutely delicious. I know I can make better myself, but who has the time? My sister was nice enough to bring me this treat last week.

I know how this can be. I’ve a tendency to want to cook complicated stuff that takes too much time, too many fancy ingredients. Or I just don’t get it together to go shopping and plan ahead for the week.
If you can take just half a day out of your schedule a week to make food, make some hearty soups – they can be cheap, really healthy, and quick to make. Freeze them for later use. Get yourself a small thermos, heat the soup up while you’re getting ready for the day in the morning, pop the soup in there and you’ve got food/ This is also a good way to get your greens so you stay healthy.
