Holiday vegan food drive!

Food bank logoOur friends at Nice Shoes are organizing a vegan food drive for our local food bank!   You can drop off your non-perishable vegan food at their store, located at 3568 Fraser Avenue, all through December.  Their hours are 11 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 12 to 5 PM on Sunday.

Unsure of what would be a suitable donation?   Fortunately the Food Empowerment Project (whose exposure of slavery in the chocolate industry I wrote about in November) has released a very handy list with just a few ideas:

Soymilk, almond milk, rice milk (non-refrigerated)*
Dried beans
Dried rice
Dried chilies
Pre-made tortillas
Low-sugar cereal
Whole grain pasta, if available
Low-sodium cans of corn, green beans, beans (pinto, red, navy)
Peanut butter*
Tomato sauce
Black eyed peas
Cooked greens (in the can)
Yams (canned)
Sweet potatoes (canned)
Vegetable broth/vegetable cubes
Corn meal
Whole wheat flour

*Food Empowerment Project encourages people to not buy products that contain palm oil due to human and non-human animal devastation that is taking place.

Nice Shoes is also holding a fun holiday event this Sunday, December 16th, to introduce Crave Conscious, a new local vegan business that specializes in almond-based yogurts and other non-dairy beverages.  And if you bring a donation for the food drive, you automatically get entered to win a prize from Crave Conscious.  More info can be found here.
