Coming soon: The Ghosts in Our Machine
Category : Uncategorized
Are animals property, to be owned and used, or are they sentient beings, deserving of rights? This is the question we are asked to think about in Liz Marshall’s latest documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machine. For those of us who attended this year’s Animal Advocacy Camp, we were lucky enough to hear Liz talk about this film and all that went into taking it from an idea and a question to a very real exploration of an important issue.
The Ghosts in Our Machine follows an international animal photographer, Jo-Anne McArthur, over the course of a year. As stated in the film notes, “Jo-Anne’s powerful photos invite us to consider non-human animals as individuals.” Liz says that her greatest desire is that “through story, sound, and picture, people will see animals differently – forever”.
What is unique about this particular film is that there is an interactive online program that accompanies it with coaches who support individuals as they try to become “ghost-free”–or vegan. Their ghost-free journeys are documented for all to see on the website.
The Ghosts in Our Machine will be screened here in Vancouver at the Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street) as part of the DOXA Documentary Film Festival The showings are May 9 at 6:00 p.m. and May 10 at 12:30 p.m. (Get more details and buy tickets here.) An after-party will take place after the May 9 showing at a nearby restaurant where we can all celebrate another step in raising awareness about the plight of animals.
It’s been great getting to know Liz better as we prepare for her visit to Vancouver and I’m so grateful to people like her and Jo-Anne McArthur for the bravery and commitment they’ve shown to bring this issue to the forefront! I can’t wait to see the film and I hope you will all come out too!
