BBT Cafe

BBT Cafe

BBT is a cute little Taiwanese cafe/restaurant hidden in the quiet neighborhood of Kerrisdale.  I frequent the cafe (especially in the summer) for their refreshing bubble tea with lemon grass jelly (see VeganMofo #6).   For years, this was all I would go to the cafe for since the menu contained only one very boring vegetarian dish.

However, since this spring, BBT cafe expanded their menu to include a full page of vegetarian selections!  The dishes are mainly veg versions of traditional Taiwanese noodle and rice dishes.   I’ve eaten my way through most of the veg menu and I’m very impressed!

When ordering the “meals” (these are the dishes with rice and side dishes) make sure you specify that you don’t eat eggs and do not want any eggs in the side dish (there’s usually usually no eggs in the main dish).

Another thing you want to watch out for is that they will always bring you your beverage in a disposable plastic cup if you don’t ask for a glass.  I’ve made that mistake a couple of times.

One of the things I really like about this restaurant is that the waiters always print out a meal ticket and allow you to verify the order before sending it to the kitchen.

Vegan MoFo#6: Bubble Tea

Yes, I’m Taiwanese and yes, I adore bubble tea.  what can I say?

Bubble tea comes in all flavours and forms.  You can get the fresh fruit slush, fruit juice (not slushy) or black/green ice tea varieties.    Of course, I must warn you about the inferior bubble tea made from nasty powder.  Always ask before you order “do you make your bubble tea from powder”?  If the answer is yes, please just back out of the store and never return.

The solid pieces that come in bubble tea are what really make bubble tea so unique.  The most common and popular solids you can get is called the “pearl”.  They are giant brown tapioca balls.  They are chewy and you suck them up from the bottom of the drink using a big fat straw.

Quite a few people I’ve encountered say they hate bubble tea because they think the consistency of the tapioca is gross.  But you can just skip the solids and order bubble tea without anything added.  Or, you can try some of the less known but extremely fun things to add to your beverage.

One ingredient I like to get is lemon grass jelly or “ai yu”.  Ai yu is a light lemony jelly that is extremely refreshing.  The jelly is made from agar-agar, a seaweed derived thickening agent.  Imagine if jello made a vegan jello that’s subtly flavoured with real lemon. Hmmmmmm

There is also a coconut jelly and grass jelly.  I will talk about those in a future post when I can get photos of them.
